Lyrics
“You are weak, I am strong
and I’ve done nothing but lead you on”
she saidDrove around all night
The stoplights were interminable
But I get along all right
as long as I don’t have to interact
with anyone else on a meaningful level
I’ll be fine
’cause I don’t want to marry my convictions (not right now)When wicked thoughts come inter alia1
You’ll wind up in Centralia, morally
Looking for a decent cup of coffee
And trying to meet halfway
It seems like I am stealing your words
But really, I’m just giving them back to you
Once again, it’s all about me
And pride is not a factor, no
Once again, it’s all about me“You are weak, I am strong
and I’ve done nothing but lead you on and on”
she said…Feeling well into my cups already
(Just until my hands are steady)
The spins are setting in
I swear I’ll never, never feel like myself again
I’d like to go back ten years
and show you a picture of yourself now
but I’m afraid that it might kill you then
You used to be such a loyal friendOnce again, it’s all about me
And pride is not a factor, no
Once again, it’s all about me
Third person in the inner monologue, again
It’s all about me
Latin, “among other things.” ↩
Quotes
JMR: I loved playing backwards guitar and had been working a lot on the first [Long Winters] LP at this point, when I could get studio time, so I had all these production ideas running through my head. We were fucking around with ideas for the song so I laid down a pass where I just played over the whole song backwards. This was all done on 2″ tape so we flipped the tape over, I played straight through, then we flipped it back over to hear it. I wasn’t sure if any of it would make it into the final mix but they used it as a kind of seasoning when they mixed it down. It pops up all over the place.JRD
